Drink Friends of the House Gin

The Sleeping Beauty

Time to make a status report of the Christmas spirit in Holland or more precisely Haarlem which is the origin of
‘Dutch sloe gin Doornroosje’ from Stokerij Klopman. According to this gin the temperature of the Christmas will rise, if it is going to be hot as this ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Disney’s famous movies is a synonym with the Christmas spirits, relaxing and fantastic entertainment during the Christmas Days. Besides being the Dutch title of the Disney produced animated movie Sleeping Beauty, then Doornroosje is also an old common name for Sloe berry.

Does this fairytale also have a spindle, that can put you in a deep sleep until your true love’s kiss breaks the spell? Don’t worry, you don’t have to allied with a Prince armed with the magical Sword of Truth and Shield of Virtue to defeat the wild and thorny sloe berry hedge to get your hands on this sleeping beauty.
The experience of the first sip is as high as Himalaya, that has delivered the Nepalese Timut pepper. The peppercorns add a bright citrusy flavor to the gin, with a slight heat that has a mild numbing effect on the lips and tongue. The taste palette also includes sloe berry, ginger, bergamot, caraway, walnuts and cucumber.
Spoiler alert, please drop the next couple of lines if you don’t want to hear the plot of this fairytale. Anise has definitely the main character of the story. The licorice notes from the anise is very insisting in its manifestation, which could make this gin a ‘love-it-or-hate-it’ kind of gin.

The anise matches perfectly the Christmas theme, so we have created a delicious ‘Mulled Gin’ by adding some Christmas spirit in the form of cloves, vanilla, apple juice, almond and a fresh orange wheel. Place the ingredients in a small saucepan over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Lower heat and let simmer for 3-4 minutes. Take off heat, strain mixture into a glass. Cheers.
